What is it?
When a tooth has been infected by decay or has been physically damaged it may be repairable with a composite filling. Composite fillings are a tooth colored material composed of a mixture of plastic and fine glass particles. This material is fairly strong and is used to repair small to moderate sections of a tooth. At Hamamoto Dentistry, we only use the highest quality and clinically proven filling materials available.
What are the benefits?
They restore the natural color and appearance the tooth
Composite fillings are mercury-free
Since they are bonded to the tooth, composite fillings strengthen the overall tooth structure, whereas amalgam fillings weaken teeth
They require less tooth structure removal during cavity preparation
How is it done?
After decay is removed, the composite material is placed in layers. It is then cured with a specialized light to harden the matieral. The filling is then contoured and polished to look and function just like the natural tooth.
How long will it last?
Fillings don't last forever. They can become discolored. Composite, tooth-colored fillings pick up stains and yellow or darken over time. When you chew, your teeth and any fillings in them are subjected to tremendous pressures. Even if no other problems develop, some fillings will wear out over time and will need to be replaced. A filling will need to be replaced earlier if it falls out, leaks or cracks. The quickest way to shorten the lifespan of a filling for decay to form in the tooth structure around the margin of the filling. Therefore proper oral hygiene and regular dental cleanings are highly recommended.
